Town of Zrenjanin, as well as most of Banat region, is using groundwater from main aquifer of Vojvodina with main characteristics: high concentration of organic compounds accompanied with intensive color and high concentration of sodium (Na), over 250 mg/l. In 1987 Institute Jaroslav Černi prepared technical documentation for conventional water treatment plant. Raw water quality and natural constituents required high usage of chemicals (230 mg/l of aluminium sulphate, for instance) for obtaining of required water quality. In 1997 Institute Jaroslav Černi prepared technical documentation for membrane water treatment plant capacity 600 l/s. Main segments of membrane treatment plant are: |
 | Chemical pre-treatment of raw water consists of: |
 | System for storage and dosage of sulphuric acid; | | System for storage and dosage of scale inhibitors. |
 | Mechanical pre-treatment - microfilter cartridges; | | Booster pumps for gaining of required pressure; | | Nanomembranes; | | Final recovery of water quality consists of: |
 | decarbonization; | | adding of lime milk. |
 | Chlorination system; | | System for cleaning and rinsing of membranes. |

| Analysis of costs was made for conventional facility and membrane treatment plant. Conventional plant (capacity 500 l/s) is 21.4% more expensive than membrane treatment plant of capacity 600 l/s and specific investments in conventional plant are 45.7% higher. Also, conventional treatment has 30.5% larger annual costs expressed per 1 m3 of treated water (0.338 $/m3 against 0.259 $/m3). |
